This deliverable presents the renewable energy sources (RES) and the conditions that may limit their development on 8 Pilot islands, 3 Demonstration and 5 Follower. The deliverable uses the information presented to determine which RES are the best to exploit on each island along with the best options for storage.
The RES potentials are reviewed for 8 islands - La Graciosa (Spain), San Pietro (Italy), the Aran Islands (Inis Mór) (Ireland), Gotland (Sweden), Lesvos (Greece), the Isle of Wight (UK), Majorca (Spain) and Reunion Island (France). Each island’s wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, wave, tidal and hydroelectric harvesting information is provided, where available. Wind speeds along with solar radiation values for the first two RES types are presented. Information on the remaining RES are more varied and are dependent on the conditions of each island. Along with the RES potentials for each island, relevant information on precipitation, topography and temperature (including heating and cooling days) are also provided where available.
Together with the RES potentials for each island, the conditions that would limit the utilization of one or all of the RES reviewed are identified. These limitations can be technical in nature such as insufficient electrical grid capacity, legal such protected natural sites or minimum distance requirements or even economic, such as differing tax rates.
After both the RES potentials and limitations have been presented, this report evaluates the two together to determine a set of feasible RES technologies and potential storage options for each island.
